DescriptionThis is a reconstruction of the plausibly blue-hued, Eocene proto-roller, Eocoracias brachyptera. Please see attached JPEG file. For my illustration, based upon my reading of the recent Babarović, F., Puttick, M.N., Zaher, M. paper, ("Characterization of melanosomes involved in the production of non-iridescent structural feather colours and their detection in the fossil record". Journal of The Royal Society: Interface, 16 (155). 20180921. ISSN 1742-5689), I prepared a ventral/anterior view of the bird perched in a tree from the Messel formation called Straphylea germanica. I emphasized the syndactyl feet present in the associated fossil specimens. Painted with YInMn Blue (PB-86).
